Rockingham Race Report

By Scott Davis, "Best in the West Contest" Winner

When I answered the phone last fall, the female voice on the other end of the line began by congratulating me on winning the contest.  It was just after dinner, the usual time for telemarketers to call with offers too good to be true.  I nearly hung up.

When Tony Raines' name was mentioned, I decided to hear this one out.  And, yes, it was too good to be true.  My wife and I had won the "Best in the West" contest and were invited to meet Tony at the Phoenix race in a month and be honorary pit crew members.  Unfortunately, some other commitments made that impossible, but after talking with Celia and Sue from Tony's PR firm, we were able to postpone the plan until Rockingham, February 24, 2001.

We were looking forward to leaving winter in Pennsylvania and hopefully seeing some warmer weather in North Carolina.  Unfortunately, we drove smack into a treacherous winter storm in Virginia, having to take an unscheduled trek through the grass median in order to avoid a multi-vehicle crash that blocked the highway and nearly collected us as well.  We were a bit shaken, but unscathed.

We arrived at "The Rock" Friday afternoon and picked up our credentials.  We made our way to the infield, walked past the row of Cup Series haulers, shining like new vehicles on a showroom floor.  We passed merchandise row, and entered the Busch Series parking area.  After walking the length of the haulers, we stopped at the Bayer Consumer Care Racing hauler to inquire as to where we might find our contact, Sue Santerre.  Tony's wife, Sue, was exiting the hauler and we introduced ourselves.

Sue invited us to join her on top of the hauler and watch the Busch qualifying in progress.  What a great vantage point, and with the computer, we were able to see the results instantaneously.  With qualifying over, we thanked Sue and headed for the trailers outside turns 3 and 4 to leave a little contribution in exchange for some new shirts, hats, diecast cars, etc....
