Tony Raines qualified 27th for Sunday’s UAW-DaimlerChrysler
400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Raines, driver of the No. 96 DLP® HDTV Chevrolet for Hall
of Fame Racing, turned a lap of 29.919 seconds, 180.487 mph
on the 1.5-mile oval.
“We had a decent run,” Raines said. “We
picked up quite a bit from practice, so that was good. With
the hard tire, everybody is pretty loose, so it will be interesting
to see how the race unfolds.”
Kasey Kahne captured his 13th career pole position and second
at Las Vegas with a time of 29.212 seconds at a speed of 184.856
mph. Rounding out the top-five in qualifying were David Stremme
(29.317 seconds at 184.193 mph), Elliott Sadler (29.368 seconds
at 183.874 mph), Juan Pablo Montoya (29.478 seconds at 183.187
mph) and Jeff Burton (29.512 seconds at 182.976 mph).
Fifty-three drivers attempted to qualify for the 267-lap race.
Those not making the cut in the 43-car field were A.J. Allmendinger,
Mike Bliss, John Andretti, Brian Vickers, David Reutimann,
Jeremy Mayfield, Brandon Whitt, Kevin Lepage, Michael Waltrip
and Ken Schrader.
As far as manufacturers went, Dodge took the top spot thanks
to Kahne’s pole position, while Chevrolet was next at
the hands of Burton in fifth. The top Toyota was Dave Blaney,
who qualified 11th, at 29.707 seconds at 181.775. The top
Ford was Carl Edwards, who qualified 13th with a time of 29.741
at a speed of 181.568 mph.
The UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 gets underway on Sunday, March
11 at 4:30 p.m. EDT. FOX will broadcast the race live
and in high-definition.
